We often believe that the only way to lose weight is by consuming fewer calories and exercising more. However, why do so many of us find ourselves regaining all the weight we worked so hard to lose? The answer lies in a little-known biological process known as Leptin.
Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells that helps regulate appetite and energy usage in the body. This hormone sends signals to help decrease hunger and increase the body’s metabolic rate, both of which are important for successful weight loss. When a person dieting successfully begins to cut calories, their fat cells respond by decreasing leptin production significantly, making it harder to stay motivated and keep losing weight over time. This can also make them hungrier than they were before they began dieting.
In addition to reducing leptin levels, dieting can also lead to increased cortisol levels, which contributes to stress eating and further disrupts our efforts at successful weight loss. Ultimately, these two physiological processes conspire against even our best efforts at weight loss, making it difficult for those who have already achieved success shedding those extra pounds to maintain their new shape for very long.
Leptin is a hormone made by fat cells that regulates food intake & energy expenditure by communicating with the brain.
Leptin is the gatekeeper of fat metabolism.
Leptin sends messages to the brain like “Keep Eating & Store Fat” or “Stop Eating & Burn Fat”
Leptin was discovered in 1994 at a prestigious university by scientists who originally thought if they gave leptin to overweight people, they would lose weight. They quickly discovered overweight people have TOO MUCH leptin and are actually leptin insensitive.
When you have too much leptin it sends all the wrong signals to the brain. At this point, your brain ignores ALL other weight loss messages.
So the more fat you have, the more negative leptin messages are being sent to your brain, which then creates leptin resistance.
Leptin Resistance sabotages all dieting efforts, causing you to feel hungry and eat more even though your body has enough fat stores.
We lose weight. We gain weight. It’s a vicious cycle and everyone seems to have the “answer,” but nothing really sticks.
Let's start with first understanding our biology and the crucial role of two powerful hormones... leptin and adiponectin.
Our biology is hardwired for survival, which means burning through fat is a last priority. Science has proven that it’s no longer a calories in vs. calories out issue
We've already answered the question of what is leptin.
Adiponectin is a hormone known for regulating glucose levels and insulin sensitivity. Lower-than-normal adiponectin levels are associated with obesity.
AWAKEND is a movement designed to help you wake up to the truth of how powerful YOU are.
Specifically, the AWAKENDbody program is here to help you understand that your body was beautifully created to thrive, so you can begin living in healthy abundance. We begin that with how to master your leptin hormone.
